About
Before joining the Hunter Law Firm, Mr. Phillips served as Managing Attorney for Legal Services Alabama, where he led litigation and client advocacy efforts in matters involving unlawful detainer (evictions), collections and garnishments, divorce, domestic violence, and other family law issues. In this leadership role, he managed complex caseloads while ensuring access to justice for underserved communities.

Education
Spencer A. Phillips earned his Juris Doctor from Southern University Law Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He is a member of the Alabama State Bar and proudly served as a Sergeant in the United States Army, bringing discipline, leadership, and a mission-driven mindset to his legal practice.
Employment
Prior to his work at Legal Services Alabama, Mr. Phillips operated the Law Office of Spencer A. Phillips for over eight years. His private practice focused primarily on criminal defense, where he represented both court-appointed indigent clients and retained clients in misdemeanor and felony matters. His experience includes handling cases involving traffic offenses, criminal trespass, burglary, robbery, rape, and murder. This breadth of courtroom experience has given him a strong command of trial advocacy, motion practice, and strategic case negotiation.
Mr. Phillips has also provided contract attorney services to multiple agencies, which allowed him to collaborate with various law firms and one of the nation’s top five financial institutions. Earlier in his career, he spent nearly ten years with Capital One Financial, advancing from a telephone associate to a respected member of the company’s Corporate Governance and Compliance team. This background gives him a unique understanding of regulatory compliance, corporate structure, and risk management.
